Volvo's next-generation lineup of electric vehicles will be bookended on one side by the flagship EX90 SUV and on the other by this much smaller EX30 crossover.

Expanding its EV offerings, Volvo is launching the small EX30 SUV with chic styling to go along with its expected high-tech platform. Single- and Dual-Motor versions are available, the former with a 268-hp rear-wheel-drive setup and the latter with a 422-hp all-wheel-drive arrangement that Volvo says makes the EX30 its quickest-accelerating vehicle to date. No matter which powertrain you choose, you'll get the same 64.0-kWh battery pack that is said to offer up to 275 miles of driving per charge. The EX30 sports cool LED lighting elements and Volvo's justly lauded comfy bucket seats, but its cabin makes sustainability a side dish to its style. Volvo has chosen recycled materials for the SUV's upholstery and partnered with carbon-neutral suppliers to give the EX30 an edge in environmental friendliness. The EX30 fits into the Volvo lineup below the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge duo and creates a new entry-level place in the brand's hierarchy.

The EX30 is a new nameplate for Volvo, using the EX prefix the company is reserving for its next-generation EVs. When it goes on sale in summer 2024, it will join the larger EX90 SUV in the brand's growing lineup of electric SUVs.

While the EX30's starting price is especially sweet, the mid-range Plus trim with the single-motor powertrain is the version we'd recommend. Sure, its 268-hp setup isn't going to be as quick as the 422 dual-motor version, but you get a little extra driving range as a trade-off. The Plus trim adds desirable features to the EX30's spec sheet, including a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels, and a Harman/Kardon stereo system.

The Single Motor Extended Range model is powered by a 268-hp electric motor mounted on the rear axle that's good for 253 pound-feet of torque. Volvo says accelerating to 60 mph should take roughly 5.1 seconds with that setup. The Dual Motor Performance model will offer thrill seekers the EV punch they're looking for. With a motor on each axle totaling 422 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, Volvo says the Dual Motor model can launch to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. So far, we've only sampled the dual-motor EX30 from the passenger seat, but found it to be a politely stable ride. The Cross Country, which will join the lineup a little later, offers more ground clearance and will surely be offered only with the dual-motor all-wheel-drive arrangement. Volvo hasn't given us every detail for that model just yet, but we don't expect to see any hardcore off-roading equipment being part of that package.

All versions of the EX30 come with a 64.0-kWh battery pack which Volvo says is large enough to provide up to 275 miles of driving per charge in rear-wheel-drive models. All-wheel-drive models are estimated at 265 miles per charge, and both can be charged on a DC fast-charging connection at a peak charging rate of 153 kW. Volvo claims the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in under half an hour on such a connection.

The EPA hasn't released fuel-economy estimates for the EX30 yet, but we expect it to be competitive with other small electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and the Kia Niro EV. When we get a chance, we'll take the EX30 on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route and update this story with its results. For more information about the EX30's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

The EX30's interior uses recycled materials throughout for a greener footprint. One upholstery option, for example, uses waste from the denim recycling process, while other options include an interior sewn from flax and a wool alternative made from recycled polyester. The interior looks quite minimalist, which aligns with Volvo's Scandinavian design strategy, but with some new twists. The EX30's glovebox, for example, is relocated to the center of the dashboard under the infotainment screen, making it easier for the driver to reach. The SUV's cupholders also fold up when not in use to free up space.

Taking a page from Tesla's playbook, the EX30 will feature a single vertically oriented display screen that serves as both infotainment and gauge display. The 12.3-inch screen uses an updated version of Volvo's Google-based interface and features Google Maps for navigation as well as wireless Apple CarPlay. The EX30's stereo system is unique in that Volvo elected to install a soundbar across the base of the dashboard rather than individual speakers throughout the vehicle.

Like other Volvos, the EX30 will come standard with a suite of driver-assistance features to help avoid accidents. For more information about the EX30's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features are likely to include:

Volvo offers a well-rounded warranty package on its new cars, including a complimentary scheduled maintenance plan that spans three years or 36,000 miles.
